Pubblichiamo la posizione di Speaking of Research, in risposta alla richiesta di PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), avanzata a Journal of Neurophysiology ed alle maggiori riviste scientifiche internazionali, di non pubblicare in futuro articoli del Prof. Nikos Logothetis, uno dei più innovativi e prestigiosi neuroscienziati viventi.
Costretto a spostare la sua ricerca in Cina, a causa delle vere persecuzioni e minacce che lui e la sua famiglia hanno subito negli ultimi 5 anni in Germania, egli sia stato definivamente assolto dall’accusa di maltrattamento animale. Il Prof. Logothetis è accusato da PETA di “ethical dumping”, in quanto la Cina non rispetterebbe neanche i principi etici previsti dall’Unione Europea in materia di sperimentazione animale.
PETA è ben rappresentata dalle posizioni estreme della sua Presidente e Fondatrice Ingrid Newkirk (“Anche se bastasse solo il sacrificio di un topo per trovare la cura per l’AIDS, noi saremmo contrari”),
Speaking of Research calls on scientific societies, journals, and other stakeholders to join us in standing up in support of global science and challenging xenophobia. We urge the following:
- If you see bias, please do not ignore it. Ignoring actions and sustained campaigns of misinformation by groups fundamentally opposed to animal research such as PETA, is irresponsible. A lack of a public response to attacks on individual researchers and to campaigns based on prejudice and racism to disparage entire nations only emboldens groups whose agenda is antithetical to #globalscience #inclusiveness #respectfordiversity.
- SR calls on scientific societies, academic institutions, and agencies that fund animal research to be more vocal in disavowing such attacks on individual scientists, and on science as a global enterprise. The risks to the health and wellbeing of humans and other animals, to the environment, and to society are too great otherwise.
